EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHYDon’t be afraid to go out on a limb because that’s where the fruit is!” - Bob Ross
I believe that art education should be an experimental process that encourages students to question assumptions about the world around them. Art can help students develop confidence in their abilities to think and take chances. It will bolster their ability to think critically and constructively. Art is also an inclusive and multicultural practice that helps students appreciate diversity. Ultimately, the valuable skills that are taught in the art room will lead them to be successful individuals both intellectually and emotionally.
Art has a powerful ability to spark curiosity. It is a visual language that encourages the viewer and maker to have an open mind, escape into existential thoughts, and find creativity in their everyday lives. As an educator, I will provide a stimulating environment that makes students curious and encourages them to become critical thinkers who are capable of action. I will teach in visual and haptic methods of learning, instilling basic understandings, principles, and knowledge of art and art history through different artistic and cultural perspectives. In my classroom, I will incorporate these models of education into project-based lessons. I will serve as a guide that encourages them to take risks in how they apply what they have learned in the classroom. Because there is no one correct answer with art, students are encouraged to take chances and think creatively. Throughout the class, I will continue to expand the student’s repertoire of artistic abilities by providing them examples of artworks, demonstrating skills, and promoting discussions that get them to think more broadly about solutions. Art making activities are a powerful tool to teach techniques and skills. These tools are also uniquely suited to teach students complex communication skills, innovation, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The skills and knowledge acquired through art making can be foundational for students as it helps them navigate and thrive in our complex and everchanging society. I am committed to all my future students, and to myself, to be the best mentor and educator. Art education is an opportunity to teach students about artistic ways and broaden their minds and perspective. Whether or not they pursue art-making in their future lives, the skills they have acquired will help them be artistic thinkers, who are creative and confident enough to take risks that will positively impact their individual lives and those around them. I aim to be an ethical, academic, and personal role model for my students, and to learn and grow alongside them. I will inspire my students to go out on that limb to express themselves, think clearly, and accept themselves for who they are, as well as embrace the differences of others. |
